CREATURE CONSIGNMENT
In early 2022 I was asked to design a new consignment store due to open that Spring in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Working with the owners I generated a brand Identity, logo, name and theme for the store. Based on this theme I designed the layout of the space and as well as all of the fixtures and acted as both the general contractor and primary fabricator for the build out.
Name | Identity
Consignment Store Identity Inspiration: sustainability and inclusivity. Extend the life of used clothing, keep it out of landfills, avoid the use of new materials. Make it easier for folks to recycle their wardrobe and build a collection of affordable looks that lets them express who they are.
From there two top names emerged: Echo Consignment & Creature Consignment. Echo represented the cycle of recycling and reuse of clothing that came through the store, while Creature represented a playful, inclusive place for every type of person to find something special.
Moodboards
Moodboards were created to explore potential themes, logos and mascots. A natural, welcoming, earthy color pallet was eventually selected, with natural green accents provided by lots of living plants in terracotta pots. Rather than select a "creature" mascot, it was decided to concentrate on the space, where customers embody their own creature by giving up old clothes and finding new ones that "fit" them better.
Final Colors & Logo
Space
415 15th Ave East in Capitol Hill, a 1,734 sq ft cement and cinder block rectangle formerly home to Superb Dry Cleaners.
Space featured: single large main room, 1 working restroom, no hot water, 2 working electrical outlets, overhead fluorescent lighting
Build-Out
The first phase of construction consisted of building three fitting rooms and a dividing wall to separate the retail space from the consignment processing area, break room, storage & restroom.
A 10 ft x 19ft wall with a framed doorway and containing 2 roughly 4ft x 5ft and one 5ft x 5ft dressing rooms was built.
16 ceiling mounted 4ft long fluorescent tube light fixtures were removed and replaced with an equal amount of track lighting, and the entire space was repainted a warmer cream color. Additional light switches and electrical outlets were added.
2 Consignment Processing stations were built in the back area as well as an employee break area and multiple storage shelves and racks.
A second out-of-service restroom was converted into a functioning Kitchenette with working sink & hot water heater, mini-fridge, basic appliances and additional storage.
